Overview
The Stawamus Chief, often simply called “The Chief,” is one of the most iconic hikes in British Columbia. Towering above the town of Squamish, this granite monolith offers three separate peaks, each with spectacular panoramic views over Howe Sound, the Sea to Sky Highway, and surrounding mountains. The trail is rugged, steep, and adventurous — perfect for hikers looking for a challenge and a rewarding summit.
The Ascent
The trail begins at the Stawamus Chief Trailhead, just off the Sea to Sky Highway near the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park parking lot. The initial climb is intense, featuring steep wooden stairs and uneven terrain that immediately test your endurance. You’ll pass through beautiful forested areas, and after about 30–45 minutes of climbing, you’ll reach the junction where the trail splits toward the First, Second, and Third Peaks.

First Peak (610 m)
The ascent to the First Peak continues to be steep and includes a combination of rock scrambles, chains, and wooden ladders to assist you up the granite slabs. The final stretch requires careful footwork, especially when wet. Once at the top, you’re rewarded with incredible views of Squamish, the Howe Sound fjord, and the Tantalus Range.

Route to Second Peak (655 m)

To continue to the Second Peak, you descend briefly from the First Peak via a series of metal ladders and chains.

To continue to the Second Peak, you descend briefly from the First Peak via a series of metal ladders and chains. This section is steep and somewhat exposed, requiring caution and focus. The route then rejoins a forested path that leads to the base of the Second Peak. A short, rocky climb brings you to the summit, offering sweeping views over Sky Pilot Mountain, the Sea to Sky Gondola, and the First Peak below.

Third Peak (702 m)
The path to the Third Peak is quieter and less trafficked, making it a more peaceful experience. The trail meanders through alpine forest and granite outcrops before ascending to the final summit. The Third Peak offers a unique perspective, with uninterrupted views toward the north, including Garibaldi Mountain and the Squamish Valley.

Descent from Third Peak
The descent from the Third Peak back to the parking lot is notably steep and technical. The trail drops quickly through rocky sections and forested slopes. At times, it’s easy to lose the trail, especially in areas where the markings fade or the path blends with the terrain. Pay close attention to trail markers and tread carefully, especially when navigating loose gravel or slippery rocks.

Final Thoughts
The Stawamus Chief Trail is a strenuous but unforgettable adventure. Tackling all three peaks in one hike is physically demanding, but the reward is well worth the effort. Each summit offers its own unique and breathtaking viewpoint, making the journey varied and memorable. Bring plenty of water, wear proper footwear, and allow enough time for both exploration and safe descent.
Highly recommended for experienced hikers looking for a true West Coast classic!
