Trail Experience
The hike begins steadily, winding through forested terrain with a gradual incline that lets you warm up nicely. Along the way, you’re treated to several scenic viewpoints overlooking Howe Sound.

On a clear day, the views of the Bay below are simply breathtaking and make for perfect photo opportunities or well-earned snack breaks.
Not long into the hike, you’ll start to notice the sound of waterfalls—

and you’ll hear them for most of the trail. These lovely cascades become visible at various points, tumbling down mossy rocks and adding to the tranquil charm of the forest.
The first 5 km are quite manageable, but once you reach the final 2 km stretch, things change quickly—the incline becomes significantly steeper, with loose rocks and roots demanding more focus and stamina. Take your time, and poles can definitely help.
Destination: Deeks Lake
When you finally reach Deeks Lake, you’re rewarded with a peaceful alpine lake nestled in a rugged basin. Surrounded by dense trees and mountain ridges, it’s an ideal spot to cool down, relax, and reflect on the climb. Some hikers even take a quick dip in the refreshing (read: cold!) water.

If you’re still feeling strong and have enough water left, there’s an optional 1.5 km extension to Hannover Lake, known for its beautiful, clear blue water. I’ve heard it’s well worth the effort—but in my case, I decided to skip it. My water bottle was nearly empty, my left knee was acting up a bit, and, well—at 67 years old, I figured I had enough good excuses for one day.

Tips
- Bring plenty of water—you’ll need it, especially in the warmer months.
- Trekking poles can be helpful, particularly for the steep descent.
- If you’re up for a little extra adventure, Hannover Lake is just 1.5 km beyond Deeks Lake and offers stunning views.
- Give yourself enough time—this isn’t a race, and the terrain demands respect.
Final Thoughts:
Despite the challenges, this was a deeply rewarding hike. The combination of viewpoints, waterfalls, forest, and alpine scenery make Deeks Lake a trail I’d happily recommend to fit hikers. Just pace yourself, listen to your body—and don’t feel bad if you skip the side trail. There’s always next time!
