Our Autumnal Journey to Mills Lake

The Glow of the Glacier Gorge

The night was still deep and starry when the alarm shrieked shortly after four. A gentle chill accompanied us as Hania, Basia, and I got into the car right on time at 4:30 AM. Without the highly coveted timed-entry permit for peak hours, our only option was to escape into the early morning hours. The headlights cut through the darkness of the mountain road, yet we were not the only ones with this bold plan: arriving at the trailhead, the parking lot was already half full. A one-and-a-half-hour wait in the shelter of the car followed, during which we silently watched our breath, drank hot coffee, and waited for the night to slowly give way to the first pale light of dawn. The camera battery left behind in the lodge charger was quickly forgotten as Basia resolutely raised her camera—ready to capture the awakening day for all of us.

When our boots finally touched the trail, the forest welcomed us in a magical silence. The soft forest floor cushioned every step, while the air tasted wonderfully crisp, filled with the scent of fresh pine resin and damp earth. All along the path, massive, gray granite boulders pushed their way between the trunks, shaped by millennia. The dense canopy above us began to transform in the gentle light of the rising morning. Soon, the treetops glowed in an overwhelming sea of colors that repeatedly made us stop in awe.

With every foot of elevation we gained, breathing deeply, the dynamics of the landscape shifted. Where gentle paths had just dominated, the glacial gorge now cut deeper into the earth. The constant, soothing roar of Glacier Creek accompanied us like a familiar melody. At first, it flowed gently over mossy, rounded boulders, but suddenly the water crashed through with immense power. At Alberta Falls, the torrents plunged white and foaming over the cascades, shrouded in fine mist, while the yellow aspens on the bank gleamed like torches against the gray rock.

As we climbed higher, the dense forest opened up, revealing the stone giants of the Rocky Mountains. The shapes became rougher, edgier, and more monumental. Mighty rock faces shot vertically into the cloudless, deep blue sky, forming a magnificent panorama.

The air grew noticeably thinner and cooler, but the panorama took our breath away regardless. On a massive granite boulder right by the trail, Hania and Basia took a well-deserved rest, joyfully throwing their arms into the air in front of this infinite expanse. Before us rose the rugged formations, looking as if they had been chiseled into the stone by a master hand. The jagged peaks of the Keyboard of the Winds looked like stone organ pipes silently singing to the wind, while the mountain creeks sparkled in the deep shadow of the valley whenever a ray of sunlight broke through the dense branches.

Finally, we reached the long-awaited centerpiece of our hike. Behind a final bend, the majestic scenery of Mills Lake unfolded before us. The water lay there like a giant, polished sapphire, its surface reflecting the rugged mountain peaks. Small, rocky peninsulas, overgrown with hardy, deep-green pines, reached into the lake like peaceful islands of tranquility. In the gentle midday light, we sat on the shore, letting our eyes wander across the glittering panorama, enjoying the deep feeling of happiness from reaching this magical place entirely under our own power.
