Hiking the Jaunbach Gorge near Broc: Wildly Romantic Nature and a Historic Finale

Starting in Broc: Into the Green Natural Wonder
Our hike begins in the charming village of Broc, known to many primarily for the Maison Cailler chocolate factory. Today, however, we aren’t drawn to chocolate, but straight into untamed nature. After just the first few meters on the trail, the scenery changes dramatically. The roar of the water grows louder, giving way to a dense, green oasis.
The trail leads us deeper into a spectacular theater of rock and forest. Fresh spring foliage bursts forth everywhere, moss-covered stones line the path, and the cool waters of the Jaunbach remain our constant, dynamic companion.
Spectacular Wooden Boardwalks and Wild Power of Nature
The absolute highlight of the hike is the wooden boardwalks and galleries. They were built directly into the vertically rising cliff faces. Well-secured by sturdy railings, you walk right above the riverbed here. In some places, the canyon narrows so dramatically that barely any sunlight reaches the ground—creating an incredibly mystical atmosphere.
After the narrowest rock chasms, the valley opens up again and again. The light breaks through the canopy of the trees, making the water shimmer in fascinating shades of green and gray.
There are small discoveries to be made everywhere along the way. To the right and left of the cliff faces, small, nameless torrents repeatedly plunge down to feed the main river.
The Ascent: Change of Perspective and Secret Caves
As we continue to follow the course of the river, the path climbs higher. Suddenly, a completely new perspective opens up to us. Looking down into the deep gorge bed from far above, we discover a narrow wooden pedestrian bridge that we are about to cross. The cliff faces also reveal their mysterious side here: dark cave openings bear witness to the power of water and time.
Just before leaving the actual gorge, the Jaunbach shows its wildest side once more. Wedged into a rocky bottleneck, the water rushes over thick, mossy boulders.
The Finale: Lake Montsalvens and a Piece of Contemporary History
After the final ascent, the landscape opens up and we suddenly find ourselves in front of an impressive structure: the Montsalvens Dam. Completed in 1921, this reservoir dam is a true pioneering achievement—it was Europe’s very first double-arch dam!
The view from the dam down into the riverbed from which we have just climbed is dizzying but beautiful. The olive-green water gathers in a small basin before continuing its journey.
Once at the top, we are rewarded with a postcard panorama par excellence. Lake Montsalvens lies smooth as glass before us. Behind it, the striking, jagged rocky peaks of the Gastlosen and the deeply snow-capped Dent de Broc tower into the steel-blue sky. A contrast of lush spring green and alpine winter white that leaves you speechless.
Relaxed Lakeside Hiking and a Final Thrill
To complete the hike perfectly, we follow the gentle shore path along the lake. The narrow trail snakes through light forest and repeatedly offers fantastic views of the green water and the distant mountains.
Before we head back or begin the descent, one last small adventure awaits us: a long, spectacular suspension bridge spans high across a side arm of the lake. It sways gently with every step, but it is perfectly secure and provides the ideal, slightly adventurous conclusion to an unforgettable hike.
Our Verdict on the Jaunbach Gorge
The hike from Broc to Lake Montsalvens is incredibly diverse. In a relatively short distance, you experience wild canyon romance, alpine panoramas, historic engineering, and a pinch of thrill on the suspension bridge. Since the trail is excellently maintained, it is fantastic for a day trip with the whole family—including your four-legged companion.
